Balule Game Reserve is filled to the brim with many different mammals, including the Big Five. There are rare and curious-looking species too, such as brown hyena, aardwolf and aardvark – mostly seen during evening drives. There is also a high chance of meeting those feline favourites (cheetah, lion and leopard), especially being in the company Toro Yara’s tracker-guides who can pretty much navigate the place blindfolded.
Follow Toro Yaka’s experienced tracker-guides through the game-rich Balule bush on daily safari walks, and you’ll gain a whole new perspective of nature. This is your chance to learn about tracking animals using scat and spoor, but also to appreciate the importance of smaller creatures that fulfil important roles in the local ecosystem. From ants to beetles, birds and trees, this intimate experience is definitely one to write home about.
The area surrounding the lodge attracts more than 250 bird species, including Pel’s Fishing Owl, the Southern Ground hornbill, the Lappet-Faced vulture, the Martial eagle, the Kori Bustard and the Saddle-Billed stork. In this impressive reserve, over 80% of the country’s raptor species can be observed!
While game drives and bush walks are a top highlight, nothing beats spending some well-deserved R&R back at the lodge. Don your shades and hit the pool, or book a treatment at the spa. While you do so, is not uncommon to see warthogs, kudu and impala grazing near the lodge.
During dinners at the outdoor boma, keep an ear out for bush babies and owls hiding amongst the surrounding trees.
