The vegetation in Balule Game Reserve is very wooded, which attracts all sorts of shy yet curious animals, like kudu, waterbuck and nyala. The Olifants River is the main draw, and because it is so close to the lodge, you can game view right there! You’ll be sure to meet the resident hippos, soaking themselves in the water.
From marauding elephants to skulking lions, Balule Game Reserve is a wonderland of wild animals. You’ll almost always be guaranteed the most iconic sightings at the waterholes and rivers, and your guides will always endeavour to find even more unique animals lurking within the thicker veld, or under the cover of darkness.
Evening drives will reveal the activity of nocturnal creatures such as hyenas, jackals, civets, and owls.
The Olifants River also attracts a multitude of water birds, like herons and fish eagles (listen out for their signature cry). Raptor and owl species are also frequently observed, most notably scops owl, pearl-spotted owlet, giant eagle owl, fish eagle, brown snake eagle, bateleur, hawk eagle.
During the summer months, migratory birds will arrive in search of warmth and water, bringing the total number of species well over 500 within the reserve.
After a successful evening game drive at Ezulwini River Lodge, and a sundowner or two, those lantern-lit dinners are always a welcoming sight. Take a moment to freshen up back in your private suite or chalet, then settle down in the outdoor boma where a feast fit for a lion (king) awaits.
