Expert-led game drives depart daily, just before sunrise and sunset when it's not too hot, and the animals are most active within Balule Game Reserve. Late afternoon drives venture on into the night and will bring you close cheetah, wild dog, spotted hyena, caracal, serval, honey badger. You might even get a lucky sighting of “Chavaluthu”, one of the ‘lone-ranger’ male leopards found within the area.
Experience the secrets of the Balule bush right from the lodge’s viewing areas. Between the seasonal riverbed and the active water hole, you’ll be sure to spot more than a few four-legged ‘locals’, including a solid bounty of nocturnal animals during the evening, like caracal, civet, jackals. Nighttime birds are also a welcome sight, especially the owls ― scops owl, pearl-spotted owlet, and giant eagle owl.
Mealtimes are always an occasion to look forward to at Billy’s Lodge, with breakfast served on the deck in the sunshine, or on the shaded veranda overlooking the surrounding bush. Dinners are also a highlight, with traditional South African cuisine served within the open-air boma, complete with blazing fire and star-spangled sky - talk about dinner and a show!
If you have a palate for local wine, be sure to venture into the wine cellar built into the natural rocks under the main deck.
